Assertiveness Skills

Assertiveness is a method of communication which enables a person to maintain self-respect, clearly communicate and pursue their needs, and defend their rights and personal space without abusing or dominating others. It confirms one’s right to be in the world and put forward needs, desires, ideas, and feelings.

As babies we are all born assertive - we make ourselves heard when we are hungry or need a change. However, life happens! Circumstances we go through chip away at our natural assertiveness and if not kept a check on, can lead to one being passive, unable to express one's desires, feelings, etc. This lack of assertiveness can lead to a number of mental health and relational issues.

The good news is that assertiveness skills can be re-learned. At Samway Counselling Services, we can help explore the areas you feel you lack assertiveness in, draw up an 'Assertiveness Hierarchy' and relearn some those skills.

So, are you struggling to say "No"? Are you struggling to set boundaries? Do you feel like everyone's 'doormat'?

Book an appointment today and let the journey to discovering some of those latent assertiveness skills begin.
